Meet Matthew, a resident at Quad, Inc. An Oregon-native, Matthew grew up in Welches on 9 acres, helping tend to the garden and spending time outdoors. He then moved to San Francisco but ultimately decided to move back to Oregon.
In 2016, Matthew underwent surgery to remove an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The surgery caused further issues when it bruised Matthew’s spine, affecting his mobility. Matthew has Marfan Syndrome, a genetic disorder that changes the proteins that help make healthy connective tissues. Unable to move home due to his newly diagnosed disability and the need for accessibility, Matthew sought accessible housing. Matthew found out about QUAD during his recovery at RIO, Legacy Rehabilitation Institute of Oregon. He applied and was shortly called about a vacancy.
With an accessible apartment and 24/7 shared attendant care services, Matthew maintains his independence and continues his interests such as gardening, cooking, reading, and gaming. The nine garden beds at his building give Matthew the space to enjoy the outdoors, gardening with his fellow neighbors throughout the growing seasons. Life at QUAD provides Matthew with the opportunity for independence and the assistance he needs to maintain it.
